'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus
'Tis so
sweet to trust in Jesus, (Refrain) O how
sweet to trust in Jesus, Yes, 'tis
sweet to trust in Jesus, I'm so
glad I learned to trust Thee,
It has been said that a believer must learn to exercise such a strong trust in God that when the despairing times come, trusting Him will continue to be the normal pattern for living. Or, "You will not doubt in the dark if you have truly learned to trust in the light." "Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus" was written by Louisa M. R. Stead, during one of the darkest hours of her life--the tragic drowning of her husband. While enjoying a picnic one day, Louisa, her husband, and their four year old daughter heard a cry for help and spotted a boy drowning in the sea. Mr. Stead charged into the water to save him. As often happens, the struggling boy pulled his rescuer under the water with him and both drowned before the terrified eyes of Louisa and her daughter. During this time of great personal grief, she wrote the words to this beautiful hymn. William J. Kirkpatrick is another of the influential composers of the nineteenth century who did much to promote the cause of early gospel music. He is said to have compiled over one hundred gospel song books with sales running into the millions. Some of his hymns that are still in use today include "Lord, I'm Coming Home," "He Hideth My Soul," "My Faith Has Found a Resting Place," "Redeemed," and "Jesus Saves."
